Vaping vs Smoking: Why Quitting Vapes Needs a Different Approach
Vaping is often assumed to be the easier habit to drop. In my experience, it's frequently the opposite, and there are good reasons why.
Clients often tell me they expected vaping to be the simpler habit to quit: no ash, no smoke smell, no obvious health warnings on the box in the same way. In practice, I see the opposite just as often. Vaping tends to be woven into far more moments of the day than smoking ever was, which makes the subconscious pattern behind it more deeply practised, not less.
Why Vaping Can Be Harder to Let Go Of
A few things make vapes a genuinely different habit to work with, not just a smaller version of smoking:
- It's discreet. Because it can be used almost anywhere, indoors, at a desk, in a car, the trigger-and-response loop gets reinforced far more often through the day than a cigarette ever could.
- It feels lower-stakes. Without the smell, the ash, or the same social stigma, there's often less urgency to quit, even when someone genuinely wants to stop.
- Flavour adds another layer. Where smoking is mostly about the nicotine and the ritual, vaping often adds a sensory, almost habitual "treat" element on top, which can make the behaviour feel harder to simply drop.
The Subconscious Doesn't Care Which Device
Underneath the differences, it's the same mechanism: a trigger, an automatic reach for the device, and a small hit of relief or reward that reinforces the loop. Hypnotherapy works with that pattern directly, rather than treating vaping as a lesser version of smoking that should be easier to shake off through sheer willpower.
A Structured Approach for Your Specific Habit
Because vaping tends to show up more frequently and in more situations than smoking did, sessions are built around your actual pattern: how often you reach for it, what triggers it, and what it's doing for you in that moment, so the change that follows is realistic for how the habit actually shows up in your day.
